Doula Bag: Beyond the Basics

When it comes to attending births, each doula will have their own view on what is important. Some may show up with nothing but their hands and knowledge, while others will arrive with endless tools and items they find the most helpful. No matter the way you practice, the “doula bag” has become a staple for most doulas and is a part of setting up the basics of your business. No two bags will look the same, but there are some basics that everyone should consider including, and some great ideas you may not have thought of before. We’ve compiled tips for curating a doula bag you never have to think twice about!

Don’t Forget Yourself

Even if you are don’t feel you need any items for birth support, the fact remains that you could be away from home for a good amount of time. You should include anything you would bring with you to a night at a friend’s house- a change of clothes, toiletries, your toothbrush, medication, and a phone charger to start. Your favorite snacks and a water bottle are also a must, especially if you need energy for a long stay and don’t want to rely on cafeterias or vending machines.

You may also have go-to items you bring to each birth. Business cards, treats for the hospital staff, a journal to take notes, or your camera are common examples. Make sure that you bring the things you need to get through a potentially long labor, as it’s hard to support the parents if you are struggling.

Pack for the Partner

In the frenzy of packing a hospital bag, many couples forget to take the partner into consideration. Be prepared for this, and take on the task of supporting them as well. Snacks, energy drinks, and bottled water are always good to have on hand, and even change for the vending machine if they need to take a moment alone. Extra toiletries are often appreciated as well, just in case they forget!

Setting the Mood

Many people will include items to create an ambiance in their own hospital bag, which they are welcome to do. But as a doula, some people like to offer this as a part of their service and come prepared to do this themselves.

Flameless candles, a portable speaker, or fairy lights can go a long way in terms of how the room feels, especially in a hospital setting. It’s very common for birth plans to reference the overall mood of a room, and taking this task off of the parents’ plate is usually very welcome.

The Little Things

There are a handful of things that don’t appear on most hospital bag packing lists, but will make you a hero to a birthing mom. You’ll likely learn some of these over time, but if you don’t know where to start, here are two of our favorites: chapstick and hair ties. These are small and may seem inconsequential, but can make a huge difference during labor.
